International Centre for Life, Newcastle Upon Tyne

Would you like to join a charitable trust that’s unlike anywhere else in the world? The International Centre for Life (or ‘Life’ as we’re known) is a pioneering science village in the heart of Newcastle upon Tyne. We are proudly independent, entrepreneurial and quirky – and we are always interested in hearing from people with the talent, drive and skills to help us continue to make a difference.

We live in a world that’s shaped by science and technology. Everyone has the potential to be inspired and fascinated by science and should feel comfortable and confident in exploring it. Our purpose is to make science engaging, accessible and relevant to all. This includes helping school children to embrace science and to consider the exciting and rewarding careers in this field.

A key part of Life is the science centre, which opened in May 2000. It is the science centre for the North, attracting around 300,000 visitors per year. Our varied and exciting engagement programme serves families, schools, adults, pre-schoolers and teenagers.

We are looking for candidates to join our explainer team who are as passionate as we are about engaging people with science. As someone who is customer focused, your role as an explainer will be to make a visit to Life interesting, exciting, entertaining and fun and to enhance the experience of all visitors. You will be interacting with a wide range of audiences, but primarily families and schoolchildren and occasionally on outreach in schools and community settings. You will deliver hands-on science activities including live shows and will enhance the experience of visitors around the science centre - covering all exhibitions, activities and different workshops. In addition, there will be opportunities to contribute to other elements of a changing exhibitions and events programme.

Successful candidates will have a broad knowledge of STEM and will be curious people who are enthusiastic, enjoy communicating with people and who share our desire to help everyone understand better the relevance of science in their lives. A comprehensive training programme will be offered.

The science centre is a seven day a week business and very popular on weekends and school holidays. Shifts will vary to meet the needs of the business but flexible working may be available on request.
